My name is Jeremy Reed and I am presently serving as the Chair of the Student Union of the Society for Ethnomusicology. I am writing to you, the student populous of SEM, on behalf of the Student Union to present a call for nominations (including self-nominations) for the Executive Committee position of Member-at-Large. This position is fundamentally one of support and communication for both the Student Union Executive Committee and the SEM student populous in general. The primary task of the Member-at-Large is to develop and maintain networking communication with SEM regional chapter student representatives, executive officers of regional graduate ethnomusicology associations, SEM Council student representatives, and SEM Special Interest Groups (SIGS) Sections and Committees. Additionally, the Member-at-Large is responsible for delegated tasks from various members of the Student Union Executive Committee.
If you would like to nominate yourself or someone else, please submit the name, institutional affiliation, and email address of your nominee to email@example.com (subject line: SU Member-At-Large 2017)
Here are some words from past Member-at-Large Ameera Nimjee about her experience: “It is the job of the member-at-large to provide support to the Chair, as well as to the other members of the Executive Committee. It allows one to be an active member of the Student Union, while also choosing the kinds of specific tasks to take on as they come up. I was very involved in conceptualizing and submitting an abstract for our Student Union-sponsored roundtable at the 2015 SEM meeting, on the use of social media in ethnomusicology. This was in addition to the regular duties of attending and contributing to monthly meetings via video-chat, attending and volunteering at Student Union events at SEM meetings, and occasionally recording meeting minutes and summaries. There are some exciting pilot projects taking place as the Student Union moves forward, especially in the areas of hands-on volunteering and teaching among our wider communities. I imagine the SU member-at-large can and will have direct opportunities in shaping these and other projects!”
The SEM Student Union is a unique section within the Society at large where students from different universities can network, share experiences, voice concerns, and, most importantly, support one another. Taking a leadership position within the Student Union offers a distinct opportunity to develop student-focused programming and advocate for student concerns. The students of SEM are its future and we implore you to join us in shaping student life by joining the Executive Committee!
